Portraits In Pencil

Portrait In Pencil

The art of drawing realistic faces, expressions and different looks is not always simple at first. The more you do it and practice drawing the better you will become at it. Follow these guides to begin a pencil portrait and to increase your skill level too.

The Basics of Portraits In Pencil

Use a very accurate approach when it comes to drawing heads of the portrait. Look for variations in the head and the features. Look at the person’s face and what makes it unique to them to draw the portrait. When you begin an image you want to use lines to begin organizing the position and shape of the face, as well as the features too. Make sure to also shade slightly different areas to add tone, depth and texture to the face and the features. Keep in mind to also use larger shading areas to pull the image together.

However, when you are just beginning to draw portraits in pencil you want to make sure to draw very lightly so it is easier to make changes and erase where and when necessary. Start with the eyes when you begin the drawing and look carefully of where you are placing them and their size too. This is the main balance and focal point of the drawing. Once the eyes are in place, than the nose and mouth are scaled to fit the size of the eyes, as well as their placement is directly connected to where the eyes are at. Making sure that the eyes, nose and mouth look the most like the person, as well as having the correct relationship between them will you give you a very accurate portrait as you go on.

Adding the Outline of Portraits In Pencil

As you add in the outline of the head, you want to pay close attention to where the eyes are in reference to the forehead and where the mouth is in reference to the chin. The distance between these are very close, so pay close attention that there is not too much space between either of them. Now begin adding the more detail to the face and adding in the hair too. Pay attention to the neck and shoulders also when adding those details in. Look at the angels and the shape of these areas. Pay attention to how the hair meets the shoulders or is above the shoulders, as well as where the hair line is too.

Adding In Additional Details Portraits In Pencil

This is the last area that you work on the portraits in pencil. Here you will add the final details to the hair and clothing. Such as details to the shirt that is being worn, how it folds or curves over the body. Pay attention to stray hairs that appear or how the hair moves in different directions too. Add in any details and shading to the image and the portrait is complete.
